What is the IFSM?
The Institute of Fire Safety Managers (IFSM) is a UK professional body dedicated to promoting competence, education, and best practice in fire safety management. It provides membership grades for fire safety professionals and operates the Tiered Fire Risk Assessors Register (TFRAR), which recognises assessors’ competence.
Membership Grades – TIFSM, AIFSM and MIFSM:
· TIFSM (Technician Member of the IFSM):
The grade refers to the membership level, which is typically awarded to individuals who have demonstrated competence in fire safety.
· AIFSM (Associate Member of the IFSM):
Awarded to fire safety professionals who have relevant qualifications at Level 3 and above, knowledge and experience, showing they are actively involved in fire safety roles.
· MIFSM (Member of the IFSM):
A higher grade, recognising experienced fire safety practitioners with significant competence (Level 4 and above) and responsibility in the field.
All designations are post-nominals that members may use to demonstrate their professional standing.
Tier 2 Fire Risk Assessors Register:
The Tiered Fire Risk Assessors Register (TFRAR) is the IFSM’s scheme to classify fire risk assessors by competence.
• Tier 2 registrants must show practical experience and pass an IFSM assessment process, including submission of assessments.
This ensures duty holders can choose assessors who are appropriately qualified for their building type.
Specialist Pods – The Construction Pod:
Within Tier 2, IFSM also supports specialist “pods”. These are groups of assessors with proven expertise in particular sectors.
• The Construction Pod identifies fire risk assessors competent to carry out assessments in construction environments, where fire safety risks and management needs differ from standard buildings.
• Pod membership provides assurance that an assessor has the right skills for that specific sector.
